CANON HISTORY: As a member of a super intelligent cybernetic race of aliens, Brainiac 5, or Querl Dox informally, Brainiac 5 was a prodigy. Latest in the line of the Brainiac line, Querl was groomed for excellence, as even among his Coluan peers he was far more capable intellectually. Having a two level advance in intellectual potential would do that. He however, diverged from the main stream in coluan culture, which is largely solitary and somewhat ambivalent or standoffish towards other races, by showing a great interest in other worlds. Primarily Earth, where his ancestor Brainiac 1.0 had many battles with the Earth hero Superman. It was the conflict between Superman and his ancestor that began to shape him into the person he would later become. He developed an admiration for Superman, and nothing but contempt for his departed ancestor. Choosing to pursue a path of redemption for his ancestor’s misdeeds, he disconnected from the Coluan hive mind and made his way to Earth where he joined the recently formed Legion of Superheroes.

During a time where the Legion was divided, the leader Cosmic Boy out in space working on public relations between United planet members and the Legion, the remaining members at base were ambushed by the Fatal Five, a ruthless gang of super villains from all corners of the galaxy. It was in their desperation that Brainiac 5 suggested that they recruit Superman himself, since Superman’s exploits inspired the creation of the Legion; they also had a time machine.

It may be prudent to note that Brainiac 5 may have known that recruiting Superman was always meant to happen, and that his deliberately recruiting a young superman inadvertently helped create the man that inspired his team to do what they do. Help people and protect the universe from evil wherever it lurks.

Within Brainiac 5 is the original base code, or in human terms, DNA for Brainiac 1.0. He literally has a copy of the original Brainiac in his brain which did allow him to have some inside information on many details of Superman’s life where mere research failed.

Two years later in an extended conflict with the conqueror overlord Imperiex, Brainiac was forced to access the subroutine when his team’s trust in him was strained and his own abilities were not able to find a solution to the problem. He interfaced with Brainiac 1.0 and gained new powers, but was forced to deal with the influence of his long dead ancestor, struggling to suppress new urges and his innate desire to control the variables and chaos of life.

Yes, the enemy was defeated and there was a happy ending, but it took a while for the slightly more ruthless nature of Brainiac 1.0 work it’s way into Brainy’s personality that others began to take notice. The choice to brainwash a shape shifting teammate to infiltrate their enemy’s ranks? Or deliberately setting the training levels too high, he was beginning to slip against his ancestor’s influence. He compensated somewhat, by attempting to act goofier, or cracking a few terrible jokes here and there, but it became more and more clear that Brainy just wasn’t himself over time.

During a particularly brutal battle, Brainy voluntarily allowed Brainiac 1.0 to take over, if only to save his friends. It was then that the brutal nature of Brainaic 1.0 was revealed, choosing to turn off the brains of his enemies all at once, winning the battle, but alerting his entire team to his descent into digital madness. Sensing this, Brainiac 1.0 tried to escape, only to be confronted by Superman, a fight he couldn’t win with brute force. Seemingly defeated, Brainiac 1.0 ambushed Superman with a blast of Kryptonite and left him with a piece of it looped around his head. The time in the vacuum with the kryptonite nearly killed the man of steel, and Brainiac flying off without remorse.

After Superman recovered, thanks to being shot into a yellow star while in death like coma, he returned to do combat with Brainiac 5, using another teammate Saturn Girl’s psychic abilities to try and reach the young hero inside. All seemed lost, until Superman’s bold words, proclaiming Brainiac 5’s heroism and their friendship finally reached Brainy, allowing him to pull himself together (literally and figuratively), and fight back; finally obliterating Brainiac 1.0 from his mind for good.

CANON PERSONALITY:
A reserved genius prodigy, even held against the high standards of his own people, Brainiac 5 is always the smartest person in the room. If he doesn’t have an answer, he’ll be quick to find one. Still he is often one to withhold information if he’s not otherwise forced to dumb down the details for his company. Having a super computer for a brain has it’s perks, not to mention having access to internal and external databases wirelessly at all times. This is enough to give him a high esteem of his intelligence, and he’s quick to remind those who question his expertise. In short? Compared to him, you are a moron and he knows it.

That being said, while Brainy is absolutely brilliant, self doubt is his greatest weakness. In a situation where he was certain he had the correct data, and his action plan failed, he was utterly convinced there must be something wrong with him. Even going so far as taking a coluan aptitude test over just to see if his intelligence level had declined. While it was revealed that he was tricked by an intellectual rival, Tharok, he was still pushed off his pedestal. A major blow to his ego.

All situations are problems to be solved, and everything has a solution, or at least it should. Brainy doesn't feel the need to explain the details of his plans as he expects most of them to trust his judgment. In most cases, the ends justify the means, so while he has highly developed moral foundations, he often falls slightly in the the middle of the ethical spectrum depending on how crucial the situation is. He is willing to take some risks and accept losses that someone like Superman would never do, even if he would never intentionally put anyone in mortal danger. This characteristic points out that no matter how much Brainy tries to avoid association with his family legacy, he is still similar to his ancestor in some ways.

There are times when his incredible intellect can get him into trouble. He knows what the best procedure is, he knows how to employ the best strategy. If someone doesn’t fall in line, he is probably going to say something about it. This is mostly due to lacking some social graces that the general populace has. Coluans aren’t the most social of races outside their own, nor are they known for exhibiting emotions like humans. While the emotions Brainy exhibits are genuine, they are adapted and evolved through the basic algorithms that he instituted on his own, which makes him unique among his race.

In a way, Brainy is somewhat insecure in expressing himself fully due to his incomplete understanding of humanity. In that he prefers the company of a select few as opposed to a large community. He tends to have a preference for certain legionnaires, likely due to his time spend with them in service. However he tends to warm up to new members reasonably well and is able to cooperate and command as needed. Probably the most surprising though is the enthusiasm, bordering on fanaticism Brainy had for Superman upon his arrival, which in passing years after their adventures led to some pretty interesting holographic self insert fanfiction. [Yeaaah.] Overall, Brainy exhibits fairly positive and helpful outset, while also being polite. His sense of humor tends to lean towards the snarky or dry side of things. His jokes however? Terrible.

As the descendant of Brainiac 1.0, Brainy has somewhat of a guilt complex. Upon learning of his ancestor’s evil deeds, Brainy set himself to redeem his family name, so to speak, in the name of righting the wrongs his family had been responsible for in any way he can. Failing in that, at least he can avert his own legacy in a positive way. His heritage does come with some draw backs, however. Character flaws, if you will. The predisposition for control and intellectual domination does come into play in everyday interaction. He has the tendency to micromanage, especially if he’s not particularly pressed for time which can strain the patience of his otherwise very accepting peers. In battle situations, he has been known to overanalyze or over think, giving his enemies a distinct advantage while he’s using his time thinking when he should be acting.

POINT OF DEPARTURE: At the end of the series, but before Brainiac 5 sheds his robotic parts in favor of a human biological composition. He’ll have gone through all of the beats of the show, have the same emotional baggage and guilt that he feels by the end of the show, he just will have been taken to liminal space/etc before he becomes human.

You can basically assume that he’s a copy of the standard bot!brainy created in liminal space the moment the robotic element was shed. I’d say he still be considered OU.
ABILITIES:

Telescoping limbs and regeneration: Brainy can telescope anything on his body, transforming his limbs into weapons or hands into tools as necessary. His body’s cells are regenerative biotechnological nanocellls which are able to rebuild his body, provided he has enough internal energy to facilitate the regrowth and is conscious.

His telescoping ability also comes with a hulking battle mode which is fueled by his internal energy source. He can generate force fields, fire energy blasts and employ truster boots. He basically turns into a transformer were as normally he’s just a robot with extendo arms and a swiss army everything.

Intellect: Brainy is a 12th level intellect,. It basically means his brain is super charged, about a hundred times smarter than the average human. Approximately. [Honestly any statistic I give you will be wrong. Because I am not a 12th level intellect.]

Flight. His flight ring allows for an air bubble force field so he can communicate verbally even in space, as well as a constant rate of levitation and directed flight, powered by will. Standard issue for all legionnaires.

INVENTORY; Flight ring. Built in distress signal and communication feed. Holographic imagery enabled.
ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW? This is a guy, who, given the opportunity, would apply for mod status.

PROSE SAMPLE: http://the-library.dreamwidth.org/13736.html?thread=1150120#cmt1150120
ACTIONSPAM SAMPLE: By this time, there was not a trace of Brainiac 1.0 in his systems, as far as the fifth Brainiac could determine. It was also worth noting that nearly every nanocell that made up the metals and material in his body was completely new, as if he had prefabricated every single part from a new regeneration cycle. The more alarming thing however, was that he didn’t seem to be near the Dominator ship, nor the Legion cruiser.

He was laying on a curved surface.

Once he opened his eyes, he realized that he appeared to be in an ancient 21st century gumball machine, the round surface he was sitting on? Neptune. Odd enough, while he did have a solid surface to stand upon, there did appear to be swirling gas moving about under his feet. It is a curious phenomenon to feel the effects of atmosphere in such a way, but he didn’t quite feel as if he had the time to actually explore these small planetary orbs. What would any one need to put planets in a candy machine for? And how did he end up in such a place?

Activating his flight ring, he floats to the glass barrier between him and what appeared to be a scarred desert valley. Odd that he didn’t seem to be bothered by a heat differential in here.

Choosing not to disturb the cluster of planets below him any further, he activated a mini laser in his finger, cutting a hole through the glass for him to exit the chamber. He was going to get to the bottom of this, and and figure out what has become of his friends. He owed them that much, after what he’s done.
